A power transmission chain can be identified by a series of two or more connected mechanical components used to transmit power or materials from one location to another.
There is a wide range of chains that are used, depending on the application, the operating environment and the physical stresses, forces and demands.

Roller Chain
A roller chain is the most common type of chain and most easily recognized. The chain on a bicycle is standard roller chain.
A roller chain is referred to by the pitch and the type of roller. Standard sizes would include 40 Chain, 60 Chain, and 80 Chain. The numbers are determined by the following:
The first number in a roller chain designation will tell you the pitch. It is measured in eighths of an inch.
30 chain would have a pitch of 3/8 of an inch or .375”
80 chain would have a pitch of 8/8 of an inch or 1.000”
The second number in the designation describes the chain’s roller
0=Standard construction with a roller
1=Lightweight Construction
2=Oversize Roller
5=Rollerless
Heavy Series Roller Chain
The heavy series roller chain is manufactured with side bars that are equal to the next size larger chain size and contoured side plates. These chains have added fatigue resistance suitable for high fatigue applications.
Steel Pintle Chain
The steel pintle chain is ideally suited for a wide range of applications such as salt, sand, and fertilizer spreaders, hay handling and other similar conveying systems. The open barrel construction minimizes pin surface contact within the barrel, eliminating seizing due to corrosion. It also eliminates material build up in the barrel and sprocket root for a smoother operation and long life.
Engineered Class Chain
Engineering class chains are typically large in pitch and are designed with higher safety factors and more clearances. These chains may have specialized attachments, materials, seal, or plating for specific applications and environments. They are rated by workload and strength.
Most engineering class chains will fit in the following categories:
- Drive Chain
- Roller Conveyor Chain
- Bushed Chain
- Welded Chain
- Bar and Pin Chain
- Barloop Chain
- Detachable Link Chain
- Plastic Engineering Chain
